What is Astronomical Data Query Language (ADQL)?

Astronomical Data Query Language (ADQL) is a specialized query language used by astronomers to retrieve data from large astronomical databases.

It is similar to SQL (Structured Query Language) but designed specifically for querying catalogs of stars, galaxies, and other celestial objects.

ADQL allows users to perform complex searches, such as filtering objects by position, brightness, or velocity, across vast datasets.

It is widely used in Virtual Observatory (VO) services, making it easier for researchers to access and analyze astronomical data.

With ADQL, astronomers can extract precise information to support their research.
